10/22/2018

Airing this Sunday, October 21, Viewers will get a Unique Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Next-Generation Mega Cruise Ship, MSC Meraviglia, as she sails the Mediterranean

MSC Meraviglia, MSC Cruises’ next-generation mega cruise ship which debuted in June 2017, will be featured on MIGHTY SHIPS this Sunday, October 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

Season 9 of MIGHTY SHIPS provides a behind the scenes look at what life is like aboard sophisticated vessels that move colossal cargo, bring power to entire villages and, in the case of MSC Meraviglia, deliver spectacular entertainment and fine dining to thousands of guests while cruising European waters.

This Sunday, viewers will have the unique opportunity to discover the innovative and elegantly designed MSC Meraviglia in an episode filmed as she began her inaugural season in the Mediterranean — immediately after leaving the shipyard and being Christened — and sailed from Genoa to Naples, Messina, the island nation of Malta, and Barcelona.

“MSC Meraviglia is a magnificent ship and as we prepare for her arrival in the U.S. next October 2019, we’re thrilled that Smithsonian Channel viewers have the opportunity to get a first-hand look at the amazing amenities of the ship as well as the hard-working crew that deliver a truly memorable vacation experience for our guests,” said Roberto Fusaro, president of MSC Cruises USA. “In addition, as the leading cruise brand in Europe, we’ve seen tremendous interest from North Americans looking to cruise with MSC in the Mediterranean. MIGHTY SHIPS viewers will enjoy getting a deeper look at the region and how they can have an amazing European travel and cultural experience both on and off board.”

MSC Meraviglia, launched in June 2017, is the first ship in the Meraviglia class of mega smart ships, designed to call in most of the world’s international cruise ports. Spanning 1,036 ft. long with 19 decks and a total capacity of 4,488 at double occupancy, MSC Meraviglia is currently the largest ship in MSC Cruises’ fleet and among the largest at sea.
Meaning wonder, MSC Meraviglia boasts incredible detailed design that lives up to her name. Highlights of the innovative ship include: world-class entertainment with two exclusive Cirque du Soleil at Sea shows created just for MSC Meraviglia; a Mediterranean-style promenade, with the longest LED dome at sea at 262 ft., displaying a variety of digital skies 24 hours a day; a wide range of culinary offerings, including an expanded partnership with global Italian food expert Eataly as well as a partnership with world-renowned pastry chef, Jean Philippe Maury; and an enhanced MSC Yacht Club, which has become MSC Cruises’ signature luxury offering. In addition, the ship caters to families, with modular connected staterooms that can accommodate up to 10 people, multiple LEGO-designed play areas for all ages, and a polar themed aqua park, featuring four water slides.
Currently sailing the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, MSC Meraviglia will arrive in North America in October 2019. Her inaugural season in the region kicks off in New York with two 10-night round trip itineraries from New York, as well as a third 13-night itinerary through the Caribbean, ending in Miami.

MSC Meraviglia will then homeport in Miami, offering a full season of 7-night cruises, departing on Sundays and sailing to two itineraries in the western Caribbean. The first itinerary will include Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico and the Bahamas, and the second itinerary will stop in Mexico, Honduras, Belize and the Bahamas.
