MSC CRUISES REINFORCES SOUTH FLORIDA COMMITMENT WITH CLIMATE JOURNALISM INVESTMENT

04/23/2025

  • MSC Cruises’ donation to the Miami Herald Impact Journalism Fund in partnership with Journalism Funding Partners underscores the company’s dedication to local journalism and the South Florida market.
  • Funding will support the Miami Herald’s multimedia climate reporting position, furthering coverage of climate change and sustainability in South Florida and beyond.

MIAMI – April 23, 2025 – MSC Cruises announced a partnership today with the Miami Herald to support the newspaper's climate reporting efforts through the Impact Journalism Fund and Journalism Funding Partners. The cruise line’s contribution will support a multimedia journalist focused on climate change—connecting readers of the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald with information on the impact of climate change in South Florida and potential solutions.

Lynn Torrent, President, MSC Cruises North America, said: “We are proud to support the Miami Herald’s multimedia climate reporting position, which will focus on essential news and insights about the environment and how we can all support meaningful change. MSC Cruises is deeply invested in the South Florida market, bringing our newest and latest generation ships here, and building transformative infrastructure like our new state-of-the-art cruise terminal in Miami. Funding this role ties our investment in the region to our commitment to sustainability, as we continue to take measurable actions that create a positive impact on the future.”

Today’s announcement follows the recent debut of the shore power-capable MSC Miami Cruise Terminal and the launch of MSC World America in Miami. This contribution further reinforces MSC Cruises’ long-term investment in South Florida and underscores the company’s broader commitment to the North American market.

The cruise line continues to work toward achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 for its marine operations by investing in new technology and design, renewable fuels, and improving operational efficiency. Earlier this month, the MSC Foundation opened a new Marine Conservation Center at the cruise line’s private island in The Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Having opened to cruise guests in 2019, the island was once a sand excavation site that has since been rehabilitated and now supports a thriving level of biodiversity. The island is also home to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Reefs Program, which focuses on finding ways to reverse the decline in coral populations.

Alex Mena, Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald Executive Editor, said: “We are grateful for the support from MSC Cruises and its long leadership in sustainable practices. This gift will enable us to expand our work connecting multimedia audiences with actionable information about the South Florida environment that is so critical to all of us who live and work here.”

The multimedia climate reporting position is part of the Miami Herald’s four-person climate coverage team, which includes two positions funded by the company and two by private philanthropy. Other contributors to the Miami Herald’s climate coverage include Florida International University’s Caplin School of Journalism in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Foundation, and the David and Christina Martin Family Foundation.
